Corrosion Factors

Compared to other equipment in the seawater, the water pump under the seawater (sea freshwater and reclaimed water) environment, is due to its complicated structure and various materials, more seriously corrodes when the seawater rapidly flows, especially when the silt content is high. Even though it applies the stainless steel, such as austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, martensitic stainless and 2205 duplex stainless steel, it must take some anti-corrosion protection measures. It is because these stainless steels are easy to generate the corrosive pitting in the seam and under the sediment. Through the comprehensive analysis on the corrosive types of pump, it can be classified as a) exotic metal contact corrosion, b) seam corrosion, c) low NiCr cast-iron selective corrosion and d) pitting corrosion (hole corrosion).

Inside and outside wall of seawater circulating pump, pump spindle, guide vane, impeller, inducer and other parts.


Planning for Anti-corrosion

For protection methods, it mainly uses the cathodic protection technology. Considering that the inner cavity of the circulating pump is inconvenient for the installation of sacrificial anode due to its small room, the general protection method is introduced below. 

◆ Inside wall of the water pump: combined protection of anti-corrosion coating and impressed current system

◆ Outside wall of the water pump: combined protection of anti-corrosion coating and sacrificial anode system

Composition of Cathodic Protection System

Auxiliary anode (MMO anode material and electrode of platinum and niobium anode material), reference electrode (silver/silver chloride and zinc & zinc alloys electrode), sacrificial anode, shaft grounding device, cable (cathodic & anodic cable as well as reference electrode cable) and power control device (controlled silicon rectifier and potentiostat).
